Montana Firefighter Testing Consortium

Montana Firefighter Testing Consortium

MFTC was officially formed in 1997 when the fire departments of 5 Montana municipalities agreed to conduct joint testing in order to create a pool of qualified applicants for the position of entry-level firefighter in those departments. Since 2001, MFTC has conducted an annual testing process toward that end.

As of 2021, the Consortium consists of the following members: Big Sky Fire Department, Billings Fire Department, Bozeman Fire Department, Butte Fire Department, Central Valley Fire District (Belgrade area), Frenchtown Rural Fire District, Great Falls Fire/Rescue, Havre Fire Department, Helena Fire Department, Lockwood Rural Fire District, Kalispell Fire Department, Miles City Fire Department, Missoula Fire Department, and Missoula Rural Fire District.

We appreciate your interest in a career in the fire service and hope you will consider participating in the Consortium’s upcoming testing process.

We are proud to be serving the citizens of the great State of Montana to the best of our abilities.

We have contracted with Public Safety Training (PST) to conduct our testing this year. They will have testing dates in April and May and written testing online or in person. To register, go to their web site:

Tuesday, August 25th, The Montana Firefighter Testing Consortium held a special board meeting to discuss the testing that had been postponed until October. Unfortunately, due to restrictions and potential exposure to essential services staff, the board voted to cancel the October test. Our hope and intent is that we will be able to hold our normal testing in May 2021.
E-mails have been sent to all registrants regarding option to remain registered for next May or requesting reimbursement. ALL reimbursement requests MUST be received no later than October 15, 2020 and MUST include current mailing address. Refunds will be processed on a weekly basis.
Registrants will stay on the May list if they do not request a reimbursement. HOWEVER if an address or phone number changes before the end of March next year, please e-mail to update your registration. Further details regarding updating test date selections will be sent at a later date as well.
Again, thank you everyone for your patience in these unprecedented times. Stay healthy!

As previously mentioned, the testing normally held in May was delayed until October 12-15, 2020 due to COVID-19.  In light of this, the consortium has elected to re-open the registration for anyone who did not register previously and would like to test in October. Registration is $100 and will be open until 5 pm, July 31, 2020.   Click on the “Apply” tab above to register.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak across the world and the unknowns for the near future, the MT Firefighter Testing Consortium has chosen to delay the testing until October 12-15, 2020. The Practice Test will be Sept. 11th & 12th. This decision was difficult to make, but the safety of our staff and all registrants is vitally important to us.
E-mails were sent out on 3/19 to all who registered. If you don’t see an e-mail from shall@helenamt.gov, look in your junk or spam folder. If you can not find it, send an e-mail to said address and I will reply back with full notice.

Watch for additional information and updates later.

Wishing good health to everyone!!!

Registration is open for the  May 18-21, 2020 testing. Registration is $85 until January 15th, then $100 until March 13th, 5 pm MST.
Testing will again be in Great Falls, MT.

This year we are trying something different with scheduling.  Each day, the written test will be administered in the morning and afterwards, the CPAT will start. The course “Viewing” will take place Monday between written and physical and in the evening (around 7) for the following days.

The registration will require you to chose a 1st and 2nd choice for testing days, as there will be a limit for each day. To start with only Monday – Wednesday will be available. If those get close to filling up, then a Thursday option will open.

If this is your first time testing, PLEASE read the information on the other tabs prior to registering. If you have questions that were not answered on this web page, click the “Contact Us” link for options.

Click the “apply” tab above to register.
