Montana Firefighter Testing Consortium
MFTC was officially formed in 1997 when the fire departments of 5 Montana municipalities agreed to conduct joint testing in order to create a pool of qualified applicants for the position of entry-level firefighter in those departments. Since 2001, MFTC has conducted an annual testing process toward that end.
As of 2016, the Consortium consists of the following members: Big Sky Fire Department; Billings Fire Department; Bozeman Fire Department; Butte Fire Department; Great Falls Fire/Rescue; Helena Fire Department; Lockwood Rural Fire District; Miles City Fire Department; Missoula Fire Department; and Missoula Rural Fire District. In 2014 Central Valley Fire District joined & Havre Fire Department joined in 2018.
We appreciate your interest in a career in the fire service and hope you will consider participating in the Consortium’s upcoming testing process.
We are proud to be serving the citizens of the great State of Montana to the best of our abilities.

Registration is open for the May 18-21, 2020 testing. Registration is $85 until January 15th, then $100 until March 13th, 5 pm MST.
Testing will again be in Great Falls, MT.
This year we are trying something different with scheduling. Each day, the written test will be administered in the morning and afterwards, the CPAT will start. The course “Viewing” will take place Monday between written and physical and in the evening (around 7) for the following days.
The registration will require you to chose a 1st and 2nd choice for testing days, as there will be a limit for each day. To start with only Monday – Wednesday will be available. If those get close to filling up, then a Thursday option will open.
If this is your first time testing, PLEASE read the information on the other tabs prior to registering. If you have questions that were not answered on this web page, click the “Contact Us” link for options.
Click the “apply” tab above to register.
The registration for May 2019 testing closed at 5 pm 3/15. For those of you who did register, you will receive an e-mail and a postcard with the web location of all the documents you need for the May testing and April practice tests by the end of March. For those of you who are interested, but didn’t register, you will have to wait until next year. Registration usually opens every year by mid-November and closes mid-March.
